The Latest in Loathsome Leftist Lawfare (posted 8/24/26)

Over the last year or two I’ve been taking notes on a bunch of topics that strike me as worth writing about, and I’m going to start rotating those kind of “evergreen” columns in between my usual commentary and mockery.

One of those topics is the kind of lawfare that leftist lower-court judges have been waging against everything Trump has been trying to do.  Disclaimer: I’m not an always Trumper who thinks every policy of his is great, and beyond legal reproach.

Off the top of my head, I don’t like the way he’s rolled out his tariffs (semi-randomly, often in response to a particular action that bothered him, and driven more by personal pique than by consistent principle), or the way he’s hurt his credibility by constantly threatening to strike Iran, and then promising that a deal to end the conflict is a few days away, only to reverse himself.  I’d much rather we just start escorting every ship in the Gulf through the strait, and then blasting every IRGC attempt to interfere.

But that being said, the vast majority of Trump’s executive orders and legal actions have been clearly within his purview as commander in chief.  More than half of his EOs seem to be just clean reversals of EOs issued by Biden or Obama.  And if their original EOs or actions – giving TPS to Haitians and others with no congressional approval, allowing foreigners into the country before any asylum claims they make are adjudicated, etc. – were allowed to stand as if legitimate, any judge stopping Trump’s action would have to explain why it was perfectly fine for Biden to change policy A to B, but it’s a frightening affront to the constitution for Trump to go back from B to A.

But they don’t seem to be doing much explaining.  The underlying legal principle seems to be that it’s fine when a Dem president does it, but verboten for a GOP president to do the same thing.

Another example of this trend happened on Friday, but before I get there, I’ll cover several examples that I noted over the last few months.  And please apply this blanket caveat: I’m no law-talkin’ guy – I mean, lawyer! – so I’m just going to apply my God-given crystal brain and common sense to all of the following rulings.

Back in late June, three different judges made three different partisan rulings on three consecutive days.  The first judge said that it’s unconstitutional for a US president to use a social security database to ensure that noncitizens can’t vote, because it would violate voters’ privacy.

If this information is already in government hands, for government use, and it’s going to be kept in government hands to conduct a search that will remain private, unless and until it turns out that non-citizens are illegally voting, how could that possibly violate anyone’s privacy?  ‘

Oh, by the way, this judge is a District Court Judge for DC (strike one), was appointed by the late Joe Biden (strike 2), and is named Sparkle Sooknanan (she’s out!).  I don’t want to be petty, but “Sparkle” is an acceptable name for a children’s television show host, or possibly for an exotic dancer.  But “Judge Sparkle” is fundamentally wrong.

The second day’s ruling came from another DC judge, this one an Obama appointee (Unexpectedly!) who ruled that it’s unconstitutional for a president to ban the spending of taxpayer-provided SNAP benefits on sugary drinks and candy.  Because somewhere in the Constitution the Founders obviously dictated that hard-working citizens need to pay for non-workers’ morbid obesity and diabetes.

The third-day hat-trick ruling came from another Obama appointee, Judge Denise Casper (who is most definitely not a friendly ghost), this time from Massachusetts (Unexpectedly!).  She used her authority as commander in chief to declare that it’s unconstitutional to require proof of citizenship to vote, or to have your ballots be received by Election Day.

Because the Founders were adamant that we must count the illegal votes of non-citizen foreigners here illegally, no matter when they cast them.  Duh.

Two weeks after these dictates came down from this Triumvirate of Stupid, Sparkle was back, and she was angry.  But instead of yelling at the children on camera, or giving a lap dance so aggressive that it injured a customer in the champagne room, she insisted that her orders be followed, despite another judge ordering that they be set aside.

It seems that four other federal courts had already approved settlements ruling that the social security database could be used to prevent illegal voting (Duh!), so federal Judge Kent Wetherell – a non-insane Trump appointee in the Florida district, whose only blot on his record is that he graduated from Florida State – ordered DHS to reinstate the rules that would prevent illegal voting.  Instead of pausing her ruling while a higher court could look at the conflict and then rule that she’s out of her gourd, Sparkle stomped her feet and demanded that her orders be followed.

Because if local judges cannot over-rule executive decisions about executive branch functions made by the chief executive, democracy will die in darkness, or something.

Did I mention that she wasn’t born in the US, and has dual citizenship in Trinidad and Tobago and the US?   Because…yeah.

Which brings us to this past Friday, when Judge Jeannette A. Vargas – a Biden appointee who had once clerked for Justice Sotomayor – issued exactly the kind of ruling that you’d expect from a Biden appointee who clerked for Sotomayor.  This time the horrific crime against humanity that she was thwarting was the administration’s policy to suspend issuing visas for immigrants “while the State Department is reassessing its vetting procedures under existing immigration law.”

I mean, it’s not like under the current procedures, a certain Cadaver in Chief recently let tens of millions of poorly vetted immigrants into America, and issued visas out of a t-shirt cannon to anybody who wanted one, only to see many of them violate American laws and harm American citiz—

Oh no, wait.

Never mind.

Anyway, Judge Mini-Biden said that she thinks that our immigration laws give consular officers “exclusive authority and discretion” to determine whether an immigrant is eligible for a visa.

Did I mention that I’m not a law-talkin’ guy?  Well I’m not.  But I did a little digging into these “consular officials,” whom JMB (Judge Mini-Biden) wants to set up as little emperors who can wave people either into or out of our country.

And it turns out that the embassies and consular offices are part of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, which is part of the Department of State (headed by the Secretary of State, in this case Marco Rubio), which is an agency in the Executive branch, headed by the President, in this case DJT.

So the judge is saying that the consular officials, who are employees under their direct boss the Sec State, who is under his ultimate boss the President, must be allowed to use their own discretion to determine whether millions of foreigners are allowed to enter the country, with no ability for anyone above them in the chain of command to question their royal decrees.

You know, just like a fry cook at McDonalds can ignore the McDonalds manager and CEO and determine store policy, or a paralegal in a law firm can ignore the firm partners and determine firm policy, or a private in the army can over-rule generals and determine a battle plan.

Ridiculous!  I’m pretty sure that when a process is determined by explicit legal language, that’s the language you are supposed to follow. (Some might call that “originalism” or “strict constructionism.”) But when such a process is left up to the “discretion” of a given department, said discretion would naturally come from the top of the chain of command, rather than being decided on an ad hoc basis by the whims of whichever low-level employee happens to be working that day.

I’m detecting a subtle pattern here. No, not a bunch of female leftist lawyers appointed by leftist presidents making reflexively anti-conservative and anti-Trump rulings that coincidentally advance leftist power by restricting the power of a president who was democratically elected.

Oh no, wait.  Yes!  That’s exactly the subtle pattern I am noticing.

Countdown to a higher court reversing this latest baseless, lawfare, power-grab of a ruling: …3…2…1…

A Little Hard Work, & Voting in the Free State of Florida (posted 8/21/26)

I didn’t write a column this past Monday, because I’ve been running non-stop for the last couple weeks, getting my college rental house ready for the turnover to a new set of tenants.  I’ve been so tired that I couldn’t even muster some snarky political commentary before falling asleep.

Things weren’t helped any by the way I made a lot more work for myself at the last minute.  I needed to have three big trees trimmed on the lot my college house sits on.  The tree guy’s bid was a lot higher than I had expected, so I negotiated the price down by having him just drop all the limbs on the lot, so I could take them to the dump myself, and maybe get some good firewood out of it, too.

I hadn’t thought about the timeline, though.  (I blame all the time I spend reading about our political scene, which has likely shaved off more than a few IQ points.)  That house is on a double lot on the edge of campus (Go Gators!), and I’ve got 30 parking spots, which turn over at the beginning of a new school year, too.

When I drove up to the house after the trimming, I saw a giant mound of limbs in the parking lot, and wondered if I’d bitten off more than I could chew.  Then when I drove further into the lot, I saw two more giant mounds, covering about 10 of my parking spots!  And I had less than two weeks to get rid of all that stuff, during the hottest part of the year.

Long story short, I chainsawed and loppered my way through that fortress of downed tree limbs, and ended up taking 8 truckloads of either firewood or small stuff to our house, and 17 truckloads to the dump!  Then I rented a big log splitter to handle all of the firewood.   Given what I spent on gas and renting the log splitter, plus whatever my time is worth, I probably saved about 17 cents, and was lucky to not reinjure my neck or spine!

(By the way, my spine is doing well, for those of you who asked.  I’ve had a follow-up MRI and my final appointment with the surgeon, and he confirmed that my magical body is indeed slowly absorbing the part of the disc that had broken off, and that I won’t need surgery.  Unless I do something stupid like chainsawing several hectares of trees, and then humping them back and forth to a log splitter during a few days with heat indexes around 110, I mean.)

But as you know, we Simpsons are working dogs, not show dogs.  (And definitely not socialists, sitting around collecting assistance “according to my needs!”)

And on the positive side, I now have enough firewood for the next seven harsh, north Florida winters.  (Stop laughing.)

In other personal news, the Smoke-show wife and I voted this week.  And because we are in the free state of Florida with the best governor in the land, things went smoothly and efficiently.

I mean, after I went to the correct voting location.

I first went to the same place I voted in 2024, but for some reason our designated location has changed.  So when I showed my ID – because I’m not a Somali fraudster in Minnesota, or a corrupt Chicago ward-heeler, or a California ballot-harvester bringing in a thousand phony ballots that all list the same vacant lot as their residential address – the nice lady told me that I was at the wrong location.

And gave me a receipt that confirmed that fact, along with the address of the correction location.

So I went to the right place, showed my ID, filled out my ballot and dropped it in the secure machine, which then registered my vote.  Three minutes, in and out, no funny business, mischief, tomfoolery or shenanigans.

Just clean elections.

And I was happy with the results – which were available that evening, not two months later!  (I’m looking at you, California!)

Byron Donalds is going to be our next governor, and Ashley Moody is going to be our next senator.  On the Democrat side, TDS-riddled creep Alex Vindman spent 16 million dollars, only to get trounced by a little-known fringe character named Angie Nixon.  She’s a triple threat – a socialist, a whitey-hater, AND a mental case. She’s best known for that time she protested DeSantis’ new, brilliant congressional map by stomping around the House floor screaming a bunch of nonsense through a bullhorn.

By the way, do these people think that yelling something through a bullhorn makes it sound smarter?  Because it most definitely does not.

Static, then distorted bullhorn voice: “What do we want?”

Dimwitted mob response: “Gobbledygook!”

Bullhorn voice: “When do we want it?”

Dimwit mob: “Argle bargle!”

Bullhorn: “What? No.”

Mob: “What?”

Bullhorn: “I said Wh—[screeching feedback]”

Mob (flinching, then covering their ears):  “Aiieeeee!!”

I’ll bet if you read the Gettysburg Address or the Beatitudes through a bullhorn it would sound like a Que Mala speech.

Well, not that bad.  But worse than it should, anyway.

Where was I?  Oh yeah, election day.

The only bad news was the expected part: lefty weirdos won a bunch of the local elections.

Because: college town.

During election coverage in November, look at north Florida on the map.  We’re the tiny dot of blue in a sea of red in level-headed north Florida.

But at least I’m price-gouging a bunch of the young knuckleheads on primo parking spots close to campus.

Have a great weekend, and I’ll be back with my usual high-quality column on Monday, once I’m better rested.

A Racist Lynching that was Neither Racist Nor a Lynching, & the Hong Dynasty in WI is No More (posted 8/14/26)

I’ve got two stories today.  First, from the “We don’t hate the MSM enough” files comes the story of Tasia Fortune, a black 29-year-old mother of four who was found hanging from a tree in front of an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi.

It turns out that Jake Tapper still has a show on CNN…because alternating between lying and being wrong for many years does not disqualify you from having a show on CNN.  His show is called “The Lead, and on it he threw to a black local reporter for a report about Fortune’s death.  The story focused on race.  Unexpectedly!

The reporter started with a lot of tortuously indirect language.  “To this point, the police have not indicated publicly whether they officially consider her death suspicious…. They haven’t identified publicly any suspects.”  Local city officials “have been very deliberative in their message…not jumping to any premature conclusions, or even offering any speculation….  Again, a lot we still don’t know here.”

Okay, so far, so vague.  Nobody is talking publicly, no one is officially considering anything to be anything, no suspects publicly identified, no premature conclusions being jumped to.  No one’s even offering any speculation.

I mean, except for CNN.

Because after all that nothingness – which suggested to my non-journalist’s ears that maybe they should have waited a little longer to report on this story, given how little they seem to know about the details – the reporter put on his conclusion-jumping boots and started stomping.

“But obviously the raw imagery of a black person hanging from the tree in the South evokes a very painful history.”

Yes, obviously.  At least for anyone who obsesses about race 24/7, and is willing to jump back many decades to one or two examples in the last 70 years.

If I had a crack research staff, this is when I would have them look through the stories reporting on the many deaths of females in the recent incompetent-leftist-governance-caused wildfires in California, to see if any reporters started a story with, “Obviously the raw imagery of women caught in fatal fires evokes a very painful history of witch burning in this country.”

But lest you think that Jake and the local reporter were about to be made to look ridiculous – spoiler alert – it’s not just this one possible, not-officially-confirmed lynching that has given them early-onset Pulitzer fever.  Because this possible lynching is just part of a pattern of possible recent lynchings.

The local reporter referred to “the other two cases of people found hanging in Mississippi.”  Which I think we can all agree constitutes an epidemic of lynching!

Except the reporter had to admit that in the first case, a young black man’s hanging death was ruled a suicide.  And the second hanged man had been homeless, and his death was also ruled to be a suicide.  Oh, and he was white.

So as I do a little quick math, I come to the conclusion that fully 33% of the recent, possible lynching-adjacent hanging deaths happened to a white guy who killed himself, and that a second 33% was also a suicide.

But don’t jump to any premature conclusions that maybe there is NOT an epidemic of white supremacist lynchings happening throughout the south, because the other 33% of cases (i.e. Tasia Fortune) was likely lynched by some Klan guys.  Probably because they were furious that their leftist sponsors at the Southern Poverty Law Center had pulled their funding.

Anyway, Jake Tapper is on the case, and he’s going to get to the bottom of this, and bring the racist white nationalist perpetrators to justice!

Annnnnddddd…it turns out the police had already questioned Tasia’s black boyfriend, and then charged him in her death.

I’m not making that up.  In a story that was two minutes and thirty seconds long, CNN spent one minute and thirty seconds reporting that the police have not officially said anything at all, and that the black community is worried.  Then they spent the last minute speculating that the other two non-lynching suicides might be a pattern of lynchings.

Which left them no time to mention the tiny, insignificant detail that [begin Kinison filter] THE POLICE HAVE CHARGED HER BLACK BOYFRIEND WITH HER MURDER!!!! OH! OHHHHHH!!!!  [end Kinison filter]

As the category name says, we don’t hate the media enough.

In other leftist racism news, I’m a little sad that we won’t have Francesca Hong to kick around anymore.  The communist, racist DSA candidate for the Dem nomination in the Wisconsin governor’s race unexpectedly lost by one point this week, to another far-left nut job who had brilliantly managed to NOT say that he hates cops, and Wisconsin, and apple pie, and Thanksgiving.

I’m not sure why Hong got the gong.  She was up almost 20 points a few weeks ago, and she had all the right beliefs: socialism will work this time, America is terrible, police and prisons cause crime.  And boy, did she hate whitey!

Of course, she married a white guy, and had a half-white son with him, which you might think would indicate that she’s not a viciously anti-white racist.  Unless you heard her recent, super-creepy interview on the subject.  She criticized herself for not being aware of “communities of color,” which she attributed to the fact that “for [her], assimilation always took over.”

And if there’s one thing that the left hates about immigrants, it’s when they try to actually assimilate to America.  Yuck.

Then, in a very telling moment, she couldn’t even bring herself to say the shameful words, “I married a white guy.  Instead, she said, “I did marry a…um…. My proximity to whiteness continues, right?  My son is bi-racial, he’s half white and half Korean.”  And then she blathered on about the difficulties of “navigating his identity” and “how people perceive him” and blah blah blah.

Good lord.  I’ve noticed that several high-profile whitey-hating leftist women somehow ended up dating or marrying white men – after Ilhan divorced her brother and then another black Muslim man, she ended up with a white guy, and AOC was in a four-year relationship with the whitest of the white guys, a doughy ginger! – and I don’t get it.

The way Hong talked about “proximity to whiteness” – as if it were a dangerous exposure to a deadly disease – makes no sense.  Because if I remember my biology classes at all, in the process of making her baby, who was half… you know, you know the thing… Hong had to get pretty darned exposed to whiteness.  One might even say “intertwined with” whiteness.

(One might even say that Hong “put the ‘ass’ in ‘assimilation,” if one were not a scholar and a gentleman, like me.)

Anyway, the electorate in Wisconsin is about 80% white, and maybe enough of those people weren’t thrilled to hear Hong talk about “whiteness” the way you might talk about “ebola” or “dengue fever.”  And now, the Hong Dynasty is over before it began.

Though I don’t want to send you into the weekend on an ominous note, I have to point out that the guy who edged out the Hongster is a black guy named David Crowley.  And according to CNN, Joy Reid, Nikole Hannah-Jones and the entire MSM, in racist Amerikka there’s a 78% chance that he’ll probably be lynched before the November election.

So keep your head on a swivel, David Crowley.

Things that Work, and Things that Don’t (posted 8/10/26)

In my recent series of columns on happiness, I discussed the many ways in which living in opposition to truth or reality necessarily causes great unhappiness.  Examples include a male trying to become a female when that is not possible, or people believing that they are powerless to control their lives (i.e. adopting an external locus of control, rather than an internal one).

Chemically or literally castrating yourself will make you many things, but “happy” is not one of them.  And behaving as if you can’t control your own life is a self-destructive lie ending in a grimly self-fulfilling prophecy. (If at the end of many years of bad choices you find yourself in a bad place, but still look in the mirror and blame racism, capitalism, the patriarchy, or your astrological sign for all of your problems, you have created your own unhappiness.)

Ultimately, this principle of swimming against the tide of reality very often co-exists with a dysfunctional ideology of one sort or another.   Anybody can have a wrong idea, and then test it, and when it fails, abandon it.  But it takes ideology to convince someone that dozens of failed tests do not mean that the idea is wrong.

Absent ideology, a male who feels himself to somehow be a female would likely realize that there is something wrong with those feelings, and try to address that.  But he’s much more likely to act on those disordered feelings in disastrous ways if an influential sexual ideology tells him that he really IS a woman, and that denying his real gender is actually “gender affirming.”

In a real-world context without ideological pressures, wrong/dysfunctional/false ideas tend to be rejected when they fail, and be replaced by better ones.  When medieval architects tried to build taller buildings without super-thick bases and walls, they collapsed; when somebody came up with the idea of supporting the walls with flying buttresses, the result was beautiful cathedrals that stand to this day.

Ideology often perversely provides immunity from accountability when the ideas in question fail.  Car makers whose cars constantly break down go out of business, as do rocket makers whose rockets consistently explode on the launching pad, and restaurateurs whose food makes people sick.

But you can be a Marxist professor in the Year of our Lord 2026 – after over a century going 0-fer in experiments with socialist governance all over the world – and still get tenure.  You can call yourself a socialist and win Democrat primaries and even general elections in many areas of the country, despite socialism’s horrific record of failure.  You can be wrong about nearly every political and financial prediction you’ve ever made, and still have a high-paying gig in the MSM.  (I’m looking at you, Paul Krugman.  And nearly everybody else on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and NBC.)

Of course, ideology is not necessarily tied to dysfunction, failure and unhappiness…as long as that ideology is not grounded in fundamental error.  Hence the documented happiness gap between liberals and conservatives.

Let’s look at two instructive ideological constants, one on the left – DEI (aka affirmative action, or compensatory discrimination) – and one on the right – free market reforms.

The initial idea behind affirmative action was well-intentioned: if a group was disadvantaged and their progress thereby retarded, it’s only fair to give them compensatory advantages, to allow them to catch up.  But when that idea was tested in the real world, it quickly revealed several fatal flaws which fell under the heading of “unintended consequences.”

First, self-interested grifters quickly elbowed aside the intended beneficiaries of the compensation, taking advantage of largesse to benefit themselves.  Second, the policies created a perverse disincentive to work hard to improve, since recipients could claim rewards without doing so.  Third, they created a sense of entitlement and resentment, as if limited, temporary help was a limitless, eternal obligation.  Fourth, discrimination in favor of one group required discrimination against other groups.

Finally, as the policy failed, it required a heavier thumb on the scale and more blatant discrimination to achieve its goals.  Founders envisioned a scenario where two applicants for a job or college admission were nearly identically qualified, so that the policy preference would be basically just a tie breaker.  But that very rarely happened in the real world, and soon well qualified majority applicants were being rejected in favor of dramatically less qualified minority applicants.

Ultimately, such policies were a disaster for everyone, creating resentment in those being discriminated against, and stigmatizing and angering those who received the “benefits.”

This is a very familiar story, but two perfect examples just came up in the last week.  First, a DOJ probe found that Duke law school has still been intentionally discriminating against whites and Asians and in favor of blacks and Hispanics, despite SCOTUS ruling in 2023 that universities can no longer do that.

Duke’s lawlessness is clear.  They have been using short answers to “diversity” questions to make an end-run around anti-discrimination law.  Oddly enough, the result is the same as it ever was:  black and Hispanic applicants with similar academic records as whites and Asians had “a substantially higher likelihood of admission” – 350% higher! – than did those whites and Asians.

In fact, the median LSAT scores of ACCEPTED black and Hispanic applicants were lower than those of REJECTED white and Asian applicants!

Reality – and black letter law, plus the threat of ruinous litigation and reputational harm – should have prevented Duke from continuing to discriminate.  But the pull of ideology was too strong to resist.

The second story is a specific anecdote that stands in for a general pattern: the fall of DEI fraudster Jason Arday from his position at Cambridge.   You’ve probably heard of this one. The youngest ever black prof at Cambridge (founded in 1206!), Arday was a professor of sociology, despite having no degree in sociology.  His degrees were in education, with a focus on physical education.

That’s correct.  He was a glorified PE teacher.   Which has to make at least one person happy in the wake of this debacle.  Because Jill Biden can now relax, knowing that she is no longer the most obviously fraudulent “doctor” on the world stage!

Like DEI President of Harvard Claudine Gay, Arday had plagiarized in his dissertation.  Like racial grifter Ibram X. Kendi (aka Henry Rogers), Arday talked only and always about racism.  (If you haven’t read his paper, “The White Colonialist Origins of Dodge Ball,” you’re missing out.)  (Okay, I made that up.  But just barely.) Like many an extreme left whacko, he’s got himself a primo set of crazy eyes.  (Really, look at any picture of him, anywhere.  Cambridge should have seen him coming a mile away.)

But he went above and beyond his peers in elite fraud circles, by incorporating a heavy dose of George Santos-style tall tales.  He claimed to have had professional careers in both soccer and snooker, to have run 600 miles of marathons in 6 days, to have been the subject of a famous,  decades-long UK documentary series that began 20 years before he was born!  He had autism, and was illiterate until age 18, and had a brain tumor, too.  Oh, and did I mention that he ran the last several of his marathons on a broken leg?

Ugh.  The abandonment of all standards and integrity can be seen in the vast disproportion between his paper-thin resume – even if it had been true – and the unmerited heights to which he rose.  Because Arday wasn’t hired as a part-time lecturer or lowly assistant prof at a third-tier local college.  Despite his total lack of accomplishments and his utterly shameless and obvious ongoing grift, he was given a prestigious position at one of the (allegedly) most prestigious universities in the West!

This is the burden the left has voluntarily chosen to bear, all because they can’t alternatively bear to lay down the comforting, self-flattering lies promoted by their dysfunctional ideology.

Contrast the well-deserved humiliations of the leftist battlers against truth with the equally well-deserved plaudits being heaped on my favorite South American politician, and the owner of the wackiest sideburns since the Civil War: Javier Milei.

When Milei was elected president of Argentina in late 2023, he inherited a nation with a troubled history and in an economic meltdown.  The month-over-month inflation rate was 25%, and the Argentinian peso was one of the world’s worst-performing currencies.  Milei’s solution was a plan to roll back socialism in favor of conservative free-market reforms: slash government spending, deregulate the economy, embrace free trade, balance the budget.

Liberal wise men said it would never work.  Over 100 leading economists from around the world – including progressive hero Thomas Piketty – signed a letter warning that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation.

No.  Sorry. Their letter branded Milei as “far right” (because of course it did), and said his “lassez-faire” plan would cause “devastation.”  Political scientist Ian Bremmer (I’ve never heard of him either) warned, “Economic collapse is coming imminently.”  Felix Salmon, chief financial correspondent at Axios, said that Milei’s “wrecking ball” policies would produce “a deep recession.”

And NYT columnist and always-wrong Nobel winner Paul Krugman argued that there’s “no plausible scenario in which even $20 billion in US loans will save Milei’s failing economic strategy.”

Annnndddd… Milei’s policies  have succeeded wildly.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, Argentina ran a budget surplus in 2024, and monthly inflation has dropped from 25% to less than 2%.  The poverty rate has plunged, and in July the country got its third credit upgrade in three months.  To top it all off, Milei has now proposed a plan to make sure that the Argentine government stays in check.  Called the “fiscal shackle” plan, it requires that if the government runs a deficit for two months in a row, all non-essential government functions will be automatically suspended (no new spending, contracts or hiring) until the budget is returned to balance.

The best part?  While the “shackle” is in place, no top politicians from the president on down will be paid until the budget is again balanced.

As I finished typing that, I’ve realized that I will need to call my doctor if this condition persists for more than 4 hours.

Could the lesson be any clearer?   We should listen to Marcus Aurelius, and take reality on reality’s terms.  Why would we want to keep swimming upstream against reality and truth?

We don’t need to come up with new, esoteric theories.  We know what works (socialism and DEI policies, for example), and we know what doesn’t (free minds and free markets).

Can we please just do what works, in this midterm, and beyond?

El Sayed Wins, Nick Freitas Rules, & a Useful Idiot Gets Schooled (posted 8/7/26)

Three stories caught my attention this week.  The first was the Democrat Senate primary in Michigan, which featured the choice of the lesser of two evils: gnomish Chris-Farley-adjacent far leftist Haley Stevens vs creepy jihad-adjacent far leftist Abdul El Sayed.  Both candidates are terrible, and both fought hard to pose as reasonable and non-crazy…and neither pulled it off, IMHO.

After appearing to be cruising to a double-digit win, El Sayed managed to barely edge Stevens by around 1%.  His victory is a classic glass-half-full vs. glass-half-empty result.

On the bright side, if polls can be trusted (spoiler alert: meh), he is more likely to lose against GOP candidate Mike Rogers in November than Stevens was, and the Dems burned something like $60 million on this debacle.  And getting money out of Democrats’ hands is a good outcome, just on general principle.

The narrowness of his win also suggests that many Michiganders are rightly wary of him, and it gives the GOP one more example of an unappealing radical to hang around the Dems’ heads in purple states and districts nationwide.

On the other hand, it’s depressing to see the gains being made by a sharia-friendly Islamic political movement that is incompatible with American democracy, along with a more general trend of anti-Semitism on both sides of the aisle.  El Sayed and his close friend, the loathsome, hate-filled Hasan Piker, are countering the many justified attacks on his radicalism by playing the Islamophobia card.

And if you had previously thought that no political gambit could be more laughably worn-out and transparently illegitimate than playing the race card, I know!  Me too.  And yet here we are.

When anybody points out that Piker said that America deserved 9/11, and that El Sayed was caught on tape refusing to say anything negative about the dead Ayatollah because “many [Muslims] in Michigan are sad” that we killed him (USA! USA!), his only response is that we are bigots because we don’t like Islamofascism.

Ugh.  Piker’s popularity and influence might be the most damning indictment of the Democrat party right now – and this at a time when damning indictments of the Democrat party are thick on the ground!

If El Sayed wins a Senate seat after unapologetically cuddling up with Piker, that will be a metaphorical knee to the groin of my instinctive optimism about America.

On a more positive note, I’ve been following Nick Freitas recently, and if you haven’t heard of him, you should check him out.  I first came across him in a bunch of very short videos in which he delivers some snarky take-down of a lefty talking point, and then takes a sip out of a coffee cup with a witty saying or image printed on it.

But I’ve recently seen him in more serious and substantive conversations on various topics, and a few days ago I came across a thought-provoking 3-minute excerpt from a speech he recently gave in Texas.  If this link works, you can see it here: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1445210029411453

He recounts a conversation with an intelligent and well-meaning lefty professor in which both of them agreed on the good results they want to see in society, though they disagree on the political program that will produce those good results.  In that context, he makes the counter-intuitive claim that her fellow liberals are much more comfortable than he is with using violence to achieve their ends.

Since he is a former Green Beret who was admittedly very comfortable with violence, the claim is especially provocative.  He quickly assures his interlocutor that he doesn’t mean to offend or attack her intentions, then goes on to explain an idea that is very familiar to conservatives but (IMO) little-understood by most lefties: our calls to voluntarily take action to solve problems are morally very different from the left’s use of government action to coerce us to take the actions that they think will solve the problem.

He cites the example of a natural disaster, in response to which a conservative will urge action: let’s donate some time or money, or travel to the area and help those suffering.  If after that appeal, the hearer decides not to donate or otherwise help, she can leave that conversation in peace, because the choice to participate is hers.

But if a liberal sees that situation, he will call for government intervention – a tax increase, a regulation, a law.  And then Freitas poses the ultimate question: “What happens if I say no?  Do I get to live in peace?  You will deprive me of liberty and property, and depending on how much I resist, you will deprive me of a lot more.  You’ll take away my kids, you’ll take away my home.  Not because I didn’t want to help, but because I didn’t want to help the same way you did.  How do you square that belief with the idea that you are a tolerant person?”

He concludes with a point that we all need to remember when discussing politics with those on the other side – and I’m sad to say that it doesn’t always come easy to me: “[Start by] not assuming that the other person has some sort of evil design.  In many cases they’ve just been convinced of something that isn’t true.”

Even as I typed that, I found myself thinking…Yeah.  But what about those who DO have an evil design?

I’ve obviously still got a lot of work to do.

Finally, let’s visit Schadenfreude Corner, shall we?

The term “useful idiot” has been alternately attributed to Lenin, Stalin, an obscure Yugoslavian communist, and many others.  But its meaning is not disputed; it refers to a naïve ally of a ruthless communist movement who unwittingly brings about attacks on himself when the movement eventually turns on him.

A recent hilarious example is lefty academic, startup founder and podcaster Scott Galloway, who last year admitted to having a net worth of around $100 million.  Which is terrible, because that makes him one of the evil rich, and an oppressor, and a class traitor.  I don’t know how he didn’t know that, except that “rich” doesn’t necessarily mean “smart.”

“Martin,” you might be thinking, “are you being too hard on him?”

First, how dare you?

Second, consider this recent podcast appearance, in which Galloway bitterly denounced Commie Mamdani’s malicious doxing of that fine, upstanding American…Scott Galloway!

He specifically cites Mamdani releasing a list of the 950,000 NYC residences “that MIGHT be eligible for his pied-a-terre tax.”

Let me break down his next sentences:

Useful Idiot Galloway (UIG): “I came out in favor of this tax.”

Me:  Well then you’re happy, right?  He’s doing exactly what you said you wanted.

UIG: “He’s taken a legitimate source of tax revenue, and he’s turned it into a wanted poster.”

Me: Yes.  And also no.  Why is this tax a legitimate source of revenue?  The rich people who will be paying it are already paying the lion’s share of the taxes in NYC.  And you could make a better argument that an absentee owner should pay a lower tax rate, since she is only rarely in residence, and thus under-uses the local infrastructure that her taxes are already paying for.

On the other hand, you’re right that he’s creating a wanted poster.  Because he’s a communist.  And commies gotta commie, Scott.

UIG:  “And the question I would have is, other than trying to identify and imply that these people have done something wrong…

Me: They HAVE done something wrong, according to leftist ideology.  They financially succeeded.

UIG: “…and 18 months after a healthcare CEO was executed in the street, and then publish the list?”

Me: Yes!  Did you miss all of those compassionate liberals justifying and even celebrating Luigi’s cowardly murder of the CEO?  Have you not noticed the army of ditzy young leftists who are only too happy to service Luigi, rhetorically and literally?

UIG:  “What is the upside here? Why is he doing this?”

Me: See above, Scott: commies gotta commie.

There are really only two justified responses to the cluelessness of such a supposedly smart and definitely leftist guy as Scott Galloway.   The first is, “DUH!!!”

And the second is, “Ha!  HA HA!  HA HA HA HA!!!!”

Galloway is the embodiment of the old cliché:  “They came for the billionaires, and because I was not a billionaire, I didn’t speak out.  Then they came for private grocery store owners, and because I was not a grocery store owner, I didn’t speak out.  Then they came for Ken Griffin, and because I was not Ken Griffin, I didn’t speak out.  Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Now you’re finally learning what we conservatives always knew:  Greedy, power-hungry communist/socialist/leftists are a serious problem, Scott.

And not just when they turn on YOU.

Fauci Adds to Democrat Headaches (posted 8/3/26)

Watching the implosion of Tony Fauci last week was equal parts cathartic and frustrating.

It’s always nice to see a karmic butt-kicking administered to a bad guy who had appeared to get away with his bad actions, only to be found out and humiliated.  And after the revelations of his self-incriminating diary musings, we know for certain that his exposure has to be tormenting him.

Because his own words show how much of a narcissist he is!  And nothing is more painful for a narcissist than being ridiculed and taken down a few dozen pegs.  The height that Fauci fell from – being celebrated as a national hero, having his own bobble-head dolls and votive candles, and all the rest – had to be dizzying, as he landed, like Milton’s Lucifer, in what must have felt to him like a lake of fire.

Except that the heat was only from the public spotlight, setting fire to his once-vaunted reputation.  And what Thomas More said of Lucifer surely applies to Fauci too: “the proud spirit cannot endure to be mocked.”  Like when you ask the proud spirit the color of his tie, or of the carpet in front of him, and he’s reduced to muttering, “On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer…”

The left is always lambasting Trump for his Trump-sized ego.  And sure, fact check: true.  But Fauci’s obsessive chronicling of every bit of praise that was heaped on him by the MSM and sycophantic lefty celebrities makes Trump look like a self-effacing, mild mannered, shrinking violet.

Fauci was almost 80 years old when he wrote most of the entries, and yet it would be a really cruel insult to shallow pre-teen girls to mention how much he sounded like a shallow pre-teen girl.

“Dear Diary, Julie Roberts thinks I’m hot!  I talked to her for ten minutes, and I could almost see floating cartoon hearts coming out of her eyes the whole time.  I had Time magazine eating out of the palm of my hand, and when I asked the photographer for In Style magazine – they put me on the cover! – whether my white coat and stethoscope made my butt look big, she assured me that she would play doctor with me anytime.  I guess I’m the most famous-est person in the world!”

The frustrating part is that Fauci won’t be held totally accountable.  Being held in contempt by Congress is the worst he’ll get, when a jail sentence is more than warranted.   And it’s also frustrating to see the Dems continuing to cover for him, as they did during the hearing, and on their media.

Although I do see some punishment in that for them, too.  As I mentioned in my columns on the happiness gap, constantly fighting against the truth is a huge calorie burner, and it makes people very unhappy.  If seeing and saying the truth is like walking with the wind at your back, then the Dems have to feel like they’re constantly bent forward, their eyes on the ground as they struggle to move into the teeth of a howling nor’easter.

They’ve got to insist that men can be women, and that the flight of productive citizens from tax-hungry blue states to red states isn’t happening, and that illegals never vote.  For four grim years they had to stare into a mirror and rehearse saying things like, “Joe Biden is sharp as a tack.  The border is secure.  Hunter’s laptop is Russian disinformation,” until they could recite them with a  dead-eyed, straight face.

Most exhausting of all is that they have to reflexively take the opposite position of Trump, no matter what he is saying at the moment, even when their instincts – and every shred of common sense they have left – are telling them that he’s right.

When he says that Kaitlan Collins looks like Dylan Mulvaney, they are red-faced with fury…but they can’t tell the truth about why.  Because they’ve been lying for years that Dylan is a beautiful young lady, so comparing Collins to him – sorry, “her” – would be a compliment.

Which it obviously isn’t.  Because Dylan is a dude, and they’ve been lying through their teeth about that.

Similarly, when Trump called Haiti a sh*thole country in 2018, the Dems had to insist that no, it was a paradise on earth.  They were all suddenly looking at buying a vacation home in Port au Prince, where it definitely was NOT true that the leading causes of death were “machete-related murder,” “diseases the US wiped out a century ago,” and “despair.”

Hilariously enough, some leftist celebrities (Conan O’Brien, Susan Sarandon, and Bill Maher among them) even went so far as to buy and pose in shirts with the slogan “Haiti Is Great Already.”  (And you know that right now, they’ve got to be as embarrassed about that as Fauci is about his choosing to write his diary on a government-owned computer.)

And now that Trump is ending TPS and wants to send Haitians back to Haiti, the leftists are gnashing their teeth and rending their garments, choking on the words you know they are just dying to say: “You can’t send them back!  Haiti is a sh*thole!”

(Imbecilic RINO Ohio Governor DeWhine said it for them: “Haiti is literally hell.  We can’t send them back to hell.”)

Speaking of Bill Maher, he’s a frustrating guy to follow, because he regularly hammers the left on many issues they deserve to be hammered on, and yet cannot bring himself to leave them.  He did, after all, wear that idiotic Haiti shirt, and he lambastes Trump for being an “election denier” even as he (Maher) is in denial about the fact that that Hillary and most other Dems have also denied the legitimacy of elections they lost.

But even Maher might be getting close to his breaking point, as evidenced by his monologue over the weekend in which he attacked the Dems for allowing the terrible DSA commies to take over their party.  In a rant that ended in him saying, “I would rather vote for Sarah Palin than this sh*t!” he cited an open pledge by two moderate Democrat congressmen (Tom Suozzi of NY and Adam Gray of CA), which I’d missed.

The pledge states, “We are capitalist, not socialist.  We want safety, not lawlessness.  We are proud, not ashamed of America.”

Maher sarcastically remarked, “These should not be hard words for a congressional Democrat to sign on to.”  But then he followed with the damning closer: only 8 out of the 212 Dems in congress signed onto the pledge!

Which means that an easy lay-up of a talking point that was supposed to reassure normal citizens that it is safe to vote for Democrats in the midterms did just the opposite!

Maher quoted the insane words of the most influential DSA supporters, as well as the DSA platform itself. They want to “literally abolish the border,” along with “replac[ing] the President and SCOTUS with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.”  He also quotes Francesca Hong – leading Dem candidate for WI governor, who has joined forces with Crazy Mazie Horono to disprove the stereotype that Asians are smart – who has doubled down on her intention to abolish both prisons and the police.

So the left now has added another load blatant lies to defend: if there were no prisons or police, there would be no crime; the best way to defend the Constitution is to throw out 2 of the 3 branches of government created by the Constitution; having no border would strengthen our country.

All snarking aside, I really do hope that normie Dems (however many there are left) can regain control of their party, because it is obviously not good for one of the two major parties to be controlled by America-hating socialist/communist extremists!

Even if it’s better for conservatives in the short run for Dems to nominate DSA candidates, since that should result in our winning more congressional seats, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.  Because the scary truth is that there is growing support for communist candidates, and many of them will win elections, especially in blue states.

I feel for my lefty friends, because the rise of the DSA is only going to make their lives even harder, and increase their unhappiness.  Life is too short to spend so much of your energy persuading yourself that lies are true, or pretending to believe them and then repeating them in service of some “greater good.”

The way that Fauci did, when he claimed that the six-foot rule was science, and that the vaccine and masks would prevent you from getting the virus, for example.  Going down that road isn’t good for your soul or your mental state, especially when compared to the relief you’ll feel if you can put that burden down and start walking with the wind at your back again.

Or, as a much more eloquent Man said, “The Truth will set you free.”
